Weeks after the Tekashi69 town hall, [Rolling Stone president Gus] Wenner was indeed on the hunt for a new editor. Those he reached out to included James Bennet, who had earlier that summer resigned as the editor of the New York Times opinion section after a staff revolt over the paper's publication of an opinion piece by US Senator Tom Cotton.
The former editor of The Atlantic, Bennet pulled himself out of the running after he decided he didn't want to take on a magazine in need of an overhaul, according to Wenner and a person with knowledge of the conversations.
